Charlotte’s Plaza Midwood neighborhood is known for its relaxed vibe and eclectic mix of consignment shops, pubs, and tattoo shops. With the nightlife covered, Plaza Midwood needed a place for the community to come together during the day—a cozy coffee shop with plenty of comfortable seating. Welcome to Undercurrent—a neighborhood hangout with gourmet coffee and an added twist.
Undercurrent’s patrons enjoy an open floorplan that includes a kitchen that operates in plain view of the public. The customer areas are broken up into distinct seating areas—a bar area, a large communal table, an area with plush, cushioned chairs and sofas, and a small patio. Clean white walls and natural wood counters and floors contrast with the Spanish tile counter that separates the dining room from the kitchen. Where Undercurrent really stands out (the aforementioned “added twist”) is The Lab—a full-fledged Specialty Coffee Association Premier Training Campus that hosts classes, workshops, and tastings. Here, students can earn Specialty Coffee Association Barista and Brewing certifications.
