We spoke with @bigtroublestudios, who has been completing commissions in this style since 2008, about his process and his motivations: “For this [piece], we wanted to create a ‘crystal palace,’ which I believe was the nickname for the storage room at the end of the building. [...] The goal was to develop a seamless design to connect the outside wall along that end of the building to the inside/lobby space. I wanted to have a relatively muted colorway with a brighter vein of color going through it, as if you broke open a rock and it revealed a colorful crystal inside.”
This theme also comes through in the way @bigtroublestudios has approached his artwork through the years: “[After] some experiments[...], I was definitely hooked and began to learn more and kinda just became infatuated with spray paint and all there was to discover in that space—the techniques, the people, and just looking to explore what was, at the time, a very mysterious subculture. The commission work just naturally evolved from my painting and slowly meeting people who trusted me to add color to their spaces.”
We can’t wait to see what he comes up with next. Even in these uncertain times, we aim to engage with our community in whatever ways we can.
